The short version

Tata Companion collects no personal data. It makes no network requests to us or anyone else, contains no analytics or tracking, and stores nothing about what you browse or what your AI does.

Browser extension

What it stores, only in your browser: which Tata you have, whether it's switched on, your language choice, and the websites where you've hidden it. These never leave your device.

What it looks at, in the moment: on each page, whether a video or audio element is playing, the site's address (to respect sites where you've hidden it), and a rough word count (to know whether you're reading). On AI chat sites (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Le Chat, Meta AI and Poe), it looks only at whether a reply is being written, short status labels such as "Thinking" or "Searching the web", and whether approval or continue buttons are showing. It never reads your messages or the AI's replies. The AI's name is used only for the Tata's speech bubble. None of this is stored or sent anywhere.

Permissions: storage, for the settings above, and access to the pages you visit so it can draw your Tata there.

Desktop companion

What it receives: a small hook in your AI tools sends the companion only the name of each step, such as "a command ran" or "a file was edited", plus a short anonymous code for the session. It never sends your prompts, commands, file paths, file contents or messages. The companion listens only on your own computer.

What it can do (mischief, on by default, all of it can be switched off):

• Minimise a window you haven't brought to the front for an hour, at most once every 15 minutes. It never touches terminals, browsers, creative tools or the AI apps themselves.
• Turn the master volume down a notch when your speakers have been very loud for a few seconds, at most once every 5 minutes and never below 25%. It reads the speaker level, never a microphone.
• After a few minutes with no mouse or keyboard input, playfully carry your cursor a short way and put it back exactly where it was. It lets go the moment you move.

To see where windows are, the Windows version reads window positions and app names, never window titles or contents.

Sharing between your own computers (optional): if you turn it on, the same step names can be shared on your local network with a token, so your Tatas can appear on your other screen. They never go over the internet.

Uninstalling removes everything it installed or stored.

Children

Tata Companion collects no information from anyone, including children.
